Tyranny | The unjust power of the French monarchy |

Aristocracy | Nobles that made up the Second Estate |
Bourgeoisie | The middle class that stood at the top of the Third Estate |
National Assembly | A government consisting of delegates from the third estate. |
Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen | Was written by the Marquis de Lafayette, with advise from Thomas Jefferson. It said that government got it's power from the people not the king. It also stated basic freedoms. |
Radicals | People who favor quick and far-reaching changes to set up a new government |
Reign of terror | Led by Robespierre, actions to kill anyone suspected of being disloyal to the revolution or who might favor the return of the monarchy |
Directory | A five-person council to run the government but, lacked the support of the people |
Coup d' etat | A swift seizure of government |
Napoleonic code | Ideals which included rights of equality before the law, right to choose a career, and religious toleration |
