Ligament | Position around hip joint | Attachments | Limits what movement ? |
Iliofemoral ligament | Anterior | (appears Y-shaped) Apex arises on ilium between AIIS and iliopubic eminence. Base attaches to superior and inferior sections of the Intertrochanteric Line. | Hip extension Lateral rotation (lateral fibres) Hip adduction (lateral fibres) |
Pubofemoral ligament | AnteroInferior to joint | Runs betwen pubic bone to Lesser Trochanter | Hip abduction |
Ischiofemoral ligament | Posterior to joint | Springs from the ischium (below the acetabulum), passing upwards and laterally to blend with the posterior part of the joint capsule. | Medial hip rotation |
Transverse acetabular ligament | Within the acetabulum. | Bridges the acetabular notch. | Completes the rim of the acetabulum by bridging the acetabular notch, thus converting it into a foramen. Vessels and nerves thus enter the joint. |
Ligamentum Teres | Deep within the joint at the head of the femur. | One end is implanted into the fovea, the other attaches to the margins of the acetabular notch, the transverse ligament. Attaches acetabulum to Fovea of head of femur. | - |
