Flexion | decreases the angle between the bones |
Extention | increases the angle between bones |
Abduction | moves a part away from the median plane of the body, as in moving the leg straight out to the side or fingers away from the midline of the hand |
Adduction | moves a part toward the median plan |
Internal rotation | rotation toward the center of the body; pivoting a bone towards the midline on it's own axis |
External rotation | rotation away from the center of the body; pivoting a bone away from the midline on it's own axis |
Elevation | moves a part up, as in closing the mouth |
Depression | lowers a part, moving it in the opposite direction from elevation |
Pronation | turns the palm of the hand down |
Supination | turns the hand palm side up |
Dorsiflexion | decreasing the angle between the top of the foot and the front of the leg |
Plantar flexion | increases the angle between the top of the foot and the front of the leg |
Eversion | turns the sole of the foot outward |
Inversion | turns the sole of the foot inward |
Protrusion | extended forward or laterally |
Retrusion | being pulled back |
Protraction | moves a part forward |
Retraction | moves a part backward |
Antergrade | moving or extending forward |
Retrograde | moving backward, inverse |
