Marshall Plan   American program of economic aid for Europe drawn up by the secretary of State. Was meant to fight against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos and was extended to all European nations.

End of British Imperial rule   In 1947 Britain partitions the south Asia region into the new nations of India and Pakistan.

Indonesia Independence   In 1945 Nationalist leaders brought in Japan where able to declare independence from the Dutch. Dutch fought the movement for four years but finally in 1949 ceded independence.

Israel   Created in 1948 was the Jewish sector of Palestine which had been a place a refuge of escapees of the Holocaust.

Sputnik   In October 1957 Soviets launched the first satellite into orbit. U.S countered with Explorer I beginning the space race.

Berlin Wall   Bulit by the soviets in 1961, its purpose was to prevent easterners from escaping into the democratic West.

Cuban Missile Crisis   Soviet response to the U.S Bay of Pigs invasion. In 1962 they sent soldiers and technicians to the island to build nuclear launch sites. The U.S blockaded the island, Soviet ships turned back and the crisis was avoided.

Nikita Khrushchev   Successor to Stalin. Began the decentralization of the Soviet Union. Openly admitted to the crimes of the Stalin era. Downfall came because of his inability to handle the Cuban missile crisis.

Vietnam War   Began with the war for Independence from the French from 1946 and 1954 led by Ho Chi Minh. Communists grew in popularity and U.S intervened in order to stop the spread of communism and fill the void left by the departure of the French.

ICBM   Developed by the Soviets in 1958 this nuclear war head allowed war heads to be delivered from thousands of miles away from its destination.

Nuclear Arms Race   Began with the development of the ICBM. Was a bulid up of nuclear weapons between the U.S and U.S.S.R where each superpower attempted to have more nuclear weapons than the other.

Charles De Gaulle   First President of the Fifth French Republic. Helped give the president the power to dissolve the national assembly, call for new elections, submit important questions to popular referendums and assume emergency powers, all of which he did.

Chernobyl and Three Mile Island   The meltdown of nuclear reactors in 1986 and 1979. Led to the need for safer and more secure nuclear reactors to be built.

Mikhail Gorbachev   General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991 and was the last head of the Soviet State. His indecisiveness was part of the reason for the fall of the Soviet Union.

Perestroika   Gorbachev's plan to decentralization of the economy which included self-management of industry and agriculture and incentives for productivity.

Glasnost   Gorbachev's policy of openness with the government to the people. It led ot the liberalization of soviet society, free press, and an end to totalitarian control over political, cultural, and intellectual life.

1989 Revolutions   The revolutions in Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Poland led to dissolution of the communist regimes in these countries.

Breakup of Yugoslavia   Yugoslavia broke up into Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo. Causes the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Croatia.

U.S.S.R Dissolves   On January 1 1992 The U.S.S.R is officially dissolved. The 15 states that made up the U.S.S.R become independent.
