| symbolism | When characters or objects stand for or represent bigger, more abstract ideas.

| foreshadowing | When the author gives the reader hints as to what will happen in the future of the text.

| flashback | When the author revisits an earlier time, takes the reader back in time in order to make soemthing more clear.

| situational irony | Most common form of irony in literature. It shows the contrast between what happens and what was expected to happen or what would seem appropriate to the reader. Think of it as a cruel twist of fate.

| sensory details | Using details that apply to the senses to create an image for the reader; sight, hearing, taste, feeling details.

| imagery | using sensory detail and/or figurative language to create a visual image for the reader.

| verbal irony | Contrast between what is said and what is meant. In other words, sarcasm.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
To hide a column, click on the column name.
To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.
You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.
Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
