Blitzkrieg   lightning war - a military tactic used by the Germans during the early stages of WW II. It involved a period of heavy bombardment from the air followed by a rapid tank attack on the ground.

Phoney War   refers to a period of calm in Europe following the defeat of Poland in September 1939 and the invasion of the western Europe in the spring of 1940.

Maginot   a defensive line built by the French alongside their border with Germany

Vichy France   a Nazi puppet state in southern France

Battle of Britain   the battle for air supremacy between the RAF and the Luftwaffe during 1940 and 1941

The Blitz   the heavy bombing of British cities during 1940 and 1941

Lend-Lease   The arrangement for military materials to be provided by the Americans to the British during the war

Operation Barbarossa   the code name given to Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union

Scorched earth   name given to the Red Army's policy of destroying anything that could be of use to the enemy as they retreated from the advancing German army in 1941

Operation Overlord   code name given to the invasion of Normandy on D Day, 6 June 1944

Yalta Conference   meeting held by the Allied leaders in 1945 to discuss the future of Europe once the war was over
