Ribs   pairs extend from the anterior side of of the thoracic vertebrae and curve laterally around the trunk toward the anterior side. when curving toward the anterior, will point of be inferiorly directed

head   the bumpy end of the rib bone; it joins the bodies of thoracic vertebrae

neck   just lateral and adjacent to the head;

tubercle   laterally and distally from the neck; small bump on the posterior side of the rib. contains articular facets where the rib attaches to the bodies and transverse processes of the thoracic vertebrae

costal groove   a long groove that extends down the length of the medial side of the body of the rib; also located on teh inferior side --> helps to determine if rib belongs to the right or left side

sternum   contains three individual parts that articulate into one --> serves as the anterior attachment for the ribs through artilagenous structures called costal cartilages.

manubrium   the most superior square shaped part of the sternum

jugular notch   the small dip located on the superior end of the manubrium, along midline; located along the midline at the topo f your sternum, between the collarbones

body   located in the middle of the sternum; the largest part and serves as the attachment for the costal cartilages and ribs  
🗑
xiphoid process   smallest part of the sternum; small and triangular shaped and located on the most inferior end of the sternum

hyoid bone   the only bone in the body that does not join with another bone; the "floating bone" --> located inferior to the mandible at the top of our neck --> serves as an attachment to muscles taht form the base (floor) of our tongue as well as deeper muscles of the neck

lesser horns   set of bony protrusions located more anteriorly, inside the curve of the hyoid bone  
🗑
greater horns   bony protrusions of the hyoid bone located more posteriorly at each end of the curve
