Tidal volume   The small amount of air that moves in and out of our lungs at rest. About 500 ml.

Vital capacity   The maximum amount of air that can be moved in and out of the lungs in a single breath.

Inspiratory reserve volume   Caused by forced inspiration where more air is inhaled beyond the tidal volume

Expiratory reserve volume   Forcing more air out beyond the tidal volume.

Residual volume   The air that remains in the alveoli after expiration. Around 1,000 ml.

Primary respiratory center   located in the medulla oblonngata of the brain.

Pons   Part of the brain stem that regulates automatic rhythmic breathing.

Eupnea   The pattern of normal quiet breathing.
