Where do erythrocytes, leukocytes, and some formed platelets produced?   Red Bone Marrow
🗑
Brief description on Red Blood Cells.   Also called erythrocytes. Contain hemoglobin. Transport gases between body cells and lungs.
🗑
Brief description on White Blood Cells.   Also called leukocytes. Defend the body against infections.
🗑
Brief description on platelets.   Also called thrombocytes. Play an important role in hemostasis (the stoppage of bleeding.
🗑
What is the function of erythrocytes?   Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide.
🗑
What is the function of leukocytes?   Destroys pathogenic microorganisms and parasites, removes worn cells, and provides immunity.
🗑
What type of cells are neutrophil, eosinophil, and basophil?   Granulocytes - they HAVE granular cytoplasm.
🗑
What type of cells are monocytes, lymphocytes, and platelets?   Agranulocytes - they LACK granular cytoplasm
🗑
What is the function of neutrophil?   Phagocytizes bacteria
🗑
What is the function of eosinophil?   Destroys parasites and helps control inflammation and allergic reactions.
🗑
What is the function of basophil?   Release heparin (an anticoagulant) and histamine (a blood vessel dilator)
🗑
What is the function of monocyte?   Phagocytizes dead or dying cells and microorganisms
🗑
What is the function of lymphocytes?   Provides immunity
🗑
What is the function of platelet (thrombocyte)?   Helps control blood loss from injured blood vessels; needed for blood clotting.
🗑
What is the normal value of neutrophil, and what would elevated levels indicate?   Normal value is 54-62; Elevated Levels may indicate bacterial infection and stress
🗑
What is the normal value of lymphocyte and what would elevated levels indicate?   Normal value is 25-33; Elevated Levels may indicate mononucleosis, whooping cough, viral infections
🗑
What is the normal value of monocytes and what would elevated levels indicate?   Normal value if 3-9; Elevated levels may indicated malaria, tuberculosis, and fungal infections
🗑
What is the normal value of eosinophil and what would elevated levels indicate?   Normal value is 1-3; elevated levels may indicate allergic reactions, autoimmune diseases, parasitic worms
🗑
What is the normal value of basophil and what would elevated levels indicate?   Normal value is <1; Elevated levels may indicate cancers, chicken pox, and hypothyroidism
🗑
Why do doctors perform a differential white blood cell count?   To determine the percentage of each of the various types of white blood cells present in a blood sample. Test is useful because relative proportions of white blood cells may change in particular diseases.
