Periosteum | The tough fibrous tissue that covers a bone. The periosteum is continuous with ligaments and tendons.

Epiphysis | The end of a long bone, usually wider than most of the bone.

Diaphysis | The portion of the bone between two epiphyses. (The middle of a bone)

Medullary Cavity | The inside of a long bone that contains yellow marrow. Yellow marrow is mostly fat.

Articular Cartilage | The cartilage that makes up joints and allows for movement.

Articulation | The joining of bones at a joint.

Hematopoiesis | The production of red blood cells. This process occurs in the ends of long bones and in spongy bone such as in the skull and ribs.

Compact Bone | A type of bone that is dense and comprised of osteons.
