Describe exocrine glands   They release their products through ducts to the surface; examples: sweat glands, saliva glands, exocrine pancreas (digestive enzymes) (think - exo - exit - exit through ducts)

Describe endocrine glands   They release their products directly into the bloodstream (e.g. insulin, glucagon); examples: pituitary gland, testis, ovaries, endocrine pancreas, hypothalamus (think endo - into - into the blood)

What are mixed glands?   Has functions of both endocrine and exocrine glands; example: pancreas

What is secretion?   The contents of the cell are released

What are the 3 modes of secretion?   Holocrine, eccrine, and apocrine

What is holocrine secretion?   The cell is destroyed in the process, replaced by new cells from beneath; examples: sebaceous glands (oil) of the skin (think holo - whole - whole cell destroyed)

What is eccrine secretion?   The cell remains intact; examples: salivary glands, sweat glands, exocrine glands of pancreas

What is apocrine secretion?   The apex pinches off and is repaired afterwards; examples: milk secretion from the mammary glands (think - apo - apex)
