John Brown   An abolitionist, believed that God had chosen him to end slavery. He targeted a raid on an arsenal, wanted to start a rebellion by armed African Americans. He killed 5 proslavery people, some called him a martyr. This was exactly what Southerners feared.

Yankees   Soldiers of the Union.

Free-Soil Party   New political party formed in 1848. They stated, free soil, free speech, free labor, and free men. Party consisted of former Democrats, and Whigs.

Dred Scott   Was an enslaved African American who lived in a slave state, then moved to the free state of Illinois, but then back to a slave state. He claimed that he should be free since he once lived in a free state. His case later moved to the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Roger B. Taney   Was the chief in Dred Scott's case. He stated that Dred Scott was "property" and Congress can't take away anyone's property. He even said that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and Congress can't prohibit slavery in any territory.

Abraham Lincoln   Won the election of 1860. He believed that slavery was wrong, and was a successful lawyer.

54th Massachusetts   Led by white abolitionists, they attacked a Confederate fortification. Their courage won respect for African American soldiers. However, the South was angered by the African American soldiers and they made threats to execute any who were captured.
