lecture 2- Chemical level
Help!
---|---|---|---|---|---|
the level of organisation: | chemical & molecular, atoms, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, and organism level.
🗑
List the four chemical elements that make up most of the body’s mass | nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and carbon
🗑
Distinguish between organic and inorganic compounds | organic compunds- (from life) any molecule that contains carbon and hyrdrogen atoms.
eg. methane (CH4) = 5 organic compounds.
inorganic compound- any molecule that does not contain carbon or hydrogen.
(CO2 is an exception) oxygen, h20,
🗑
List the properties of water that make it important for living things | - SOLUBILITY inorganic and organic molecules can dissolve to become a solution.
- REACTIVITY medium for chemical reactions or chemical reaction participant.
-HIGH HEAT CAPACITY
-LUBRICATION
🗑
List the properties of inorganic acids, bases and salts | acid- release H into solutions. hydrolic acid.
Base- removes H+ ions from solution.
Salts- compound made of ions other than H+ and OH-
🗑
Describe the pH scale | pH- a measure of H+ concentration in solution.
neutral=7
acid=<7
basic=>7
🗑
Identify the normal pH range for human blood | 7.35-7.45
🗑
Define a buffer | a buffer is compounds that balance the pH of a solution by either adding or removing H+.
🗑
List the five organic compounds | carbohydrate, protein, lipids, nucleic acid, high energy compounds.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
To hide a column, click on the column name.
To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.
You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.
Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
