Epidermis facts   5 layers, 4 cells. Cells of the Epidermis are protective.

4 cells of the Epidermis   Keratinocytes, Melanocytes, Dandritc, Tactile,

5 layers of the epidermis   Stratum Basale, Stratum Spinosum, Stratum Granulosum, Stratum Luciden, Stratum Corneum

Keratinocytes (cell)   Protein, Keratin producing cell, causes toughness

Melanocytes (cell)   Protein, Melanin producing cell, gives pigment. Melanin dots towards sun. Protects the nucleus of the Karatinocyte. *EVERYONE HAS THE SAME NUMBER OF MELANOCYTES. Dark skin is just more active. Further north you go the more vitamin D your skin wants.

Dandritic (cell)   White blood cell. Responsible for an immune response. It alerts.

Tactile (cell)   Sensory. Sends info about pressure or pain; is connected to the nerve.

Stratum Basale (1) (Layer)   Bottom most layer. Contains Melanocytes, Tactile, and Karatirocytes

Stratum Spinosum (2) (layer)   2nd cell layers. 4-6 cells thick. Karatinocytes are living, Dendritic. Layer is darkening, taking on Melanin.

Stratum Granulosum (3)(layer)   3rd layer Dying, 1-2 cells, release lipids. Gives moisture.

Stratum Luciden (4)(layer)   4th layer. Only in thick parts of skin. Translucent.
