Definition
Trachea   Tube that carries air to the lungs; it is surrounded by cartilage for strength.

Bronchi   The branches of the trachea that carry air into the left and right lungs. Smaller tubes continue to branch off inside the lung.

Alveoli   Tiny sacs inside the lungs surrounded by capillaries to allow waste gases out of and oxygen to move into the blood.

Kidney   An organ that filters waste from the blood. This organ also maintains homeostasis by regulating the levels of water and salt in the blood.

Nephron   Microscopic structures in the kidneys that filter blood.

Bladder   A saclike organ surrounded by voluntary muscle to store urine.

Diaphragm   The involuntary muscle at the bottom of the lungs that causes air to move in as it contracts.

Larynx   Part of the respiratory system above the trachea that contains the vocal cords; voice box.
