Medical Terminology-Body Cavities

Dorsal cavity   Has two parts-the cranial cavity and the spinal cavity.

cranial cavity   Located within the skull, protects the brain.

spinal cavity   Located within the spinal column, protects the spinal cord.  
🗑
Ventral cavity   Has three parts-the thoracic cavity, the abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity.

thoracic cavity   Also known as the chest cavity, protects the hear and the lungs.

abdominal cavity   Contains primarily the major organs of digestion.  
🗑
pelvic cavity   Contains primarily the organs of the reproductive and excretory systems.  
🗑
diaphragm   A muscle that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities.  
🗑
quadrant   Divided into four. RUQ-right upper quadrant LUQ-left upper quadrant RLQ-right lower quadrant LLQ-left lower quadrant

regions   A descriptive system dividing the abdomen and lower portion of the thorax into nine regions.  
🗑
hypochondriac (right and left)   Are located on the sides and are covered by the lower ribs.  
🗑
epigastric   Located above the stomach.  
🗑
lumbar (right and left)   Located on the sides near the inward curve of the spine.  
🗑
umbilical   Surrounds the umbilicus. Also know as the belly button or navel.  
🗑
iliac (right and left)   Located on the sides over the hip bones.  
🗑
hypogastric   Located below the stomach.  
🗑
peritoneum   The membrane that protects and supports (suspends in place) the organs located in the abdominal cavity.  
🗑
peritonitis   Inflammation of the peritoneum.  
🗑
ascites   An abnormal accumulation of clear or milky serous (watery) fluid in the peritoneal cavity.  
🗑
Laparoscopy   The visual examination of the interior of the abdomen with the use of a laparoscope.
