Corbeling   A method of covering a space with a stone vault, created by laying each row of blocks so that the blocks jut slightly inward beyond the blocks below, until the courses of masonry on the two sides of the space meet in the middle.

Catal Hoyuk   : a Neolithic site in Turkey, near an active volcano. The people of this town made finely crafted stone tools and engaged in trade with other areas for materials that were not locally available, such as shell

Chauvet Cave   Cave in the Ardeche region of France, site of the earliest cave paintings yet discovered, datable ca. 32,000-30,000 B.C.E. The animals represented include horses, rhinoceros, lions and cave-bears

Durrington Walls   A Neolithic settlement in England near Stonehenge, with a circular plan and surrounding ditch. The buildings were evidently constructed of wood.

Newgrange   Site in Ireland of a monumental Neolithic tomb.On the winter solstice, a beam of light enters through an opening above the entrance and penetrates directly into the burial chamber.

Stonehenge   A megalithic structure on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, datable ca. 2900-1500. Built over many centuries by several different groups of people risng point summer solstice

Willendorf, Austria   Site off a Paleolicthic settlement that yielded bine tools datable ca. 24,000 B.C.E. and a female figure carved from stone.
