Private   Lowest rank in the army, it has a medieval origin and refers to normal or private people who were enlisted into an army.

Corporal   usually indicates an experienced soldier. comes from a medieval Italian word, which originally meant that the soldier was an officers bodyguard.

Sergeant   first real command rank. stems from the classical roman word, serviens which means one who serves. different variations of this rank, but the highest ranking one is sergeant major.

Lieutenant   the first officer rank. its etymology is French, referring to one who holds the place of another. initially this rank indicated that one was in charge when the commander was away.

Captain   this rank denotes the command of a company. originally this word was used to refer to a nobleman who used money to obtain the rank of lieutenant.

Major   at one point in history, sergeant major was a much higher rank, indicating someone who led a large body of troops. when modern ranks were invented the sergeant was dropped from the title

Colonel   this rank first appeared in the late 1700's when regiments were bring formed. usually a nobleman would purchase this rank and become leader of a newly formed regiment. this is the highest non-general rank

Brigadier General   one-star general. the lowest rank of general

Major General   Two-star general. Very few generals during the American civil war had a higher rank than this one

Lieutenant General   A three-star general. on the union side, only Ulysses s. grant achieved this rank. on the confederate side, they had several lieutenant generals.

General   A four-start general. Only used by the confederate army, only 8 men achieved this rank.
