---|---|---|---|---|---|
histology | the study of tissues
🗑
tissue | a group of similar cells working together to perform a specific function
🗑
four major categories of cells | epithelial, connective, muscle, neural
🗑
free surface | the exposed surface to the external environment or internal passageway
🗑
avascular | do not contain blood vessels
🗑
basal lamina | the membrane between the epithelium and the connective tissue layer, provides nutrients to the epithelium by diffusion
🗑
stem cells | short lived cells that constantly produce new cells to replenish tissue
🗑
epithelia | lining or covering tissues
🗑
simple epithelium | single layer of cells, provides thin surface for exchange of materials like between the lungs and blood
🗑
stratified epithelium | multiple layers of cells that protect against friction, prevent dehydration and keep microbes and chemicals from invading the body
🗑
transitional epithelium | special kind of stratified epitheliume with cells of many shapes that permit the tissue to stretch and recoil
🗑
pseudostratified epithelium | all the cells touch the basal lamina but grow to different heights
🗑
squamous | irregularly shaped, flat and scalelike cells; unction either to protect, secrete or diffuse
🗑
cuboidal | cubic and have a large nucleus; found in the tubules of the kidneys and in many glands and can secrete and absorb materials across the tubular/gladular wall
🗑
columnar | taller than they are wide
🗑
goblet cells | found in the small intestine and secrete mucus to coat and protect epithelia
🗑
simple squamous epithelium | a thin tissue that is in a superficial preparation appears as a sheet of cells that look like ceramic floor tile; found in serous membranes, blood vessels and air sacs of lungs
🗑
simple cuboidal epithelium | lines kidney tubules, thyroid and other glands and ducts;
🗑
simple columnar epithelium | lines most of the digestive tract and uterine tubes and renal collecting duct; have more surface area and may caontain cilia
🗑
stratified squamous epithelium | forms superficial region of the skin; manufacture keratin; dry surface due to keratin.Nonkeratinized cells line tongue, mouth esophagus, anus and vagina
🗑
stratified cuboidal epithelium | uncommon, found in sweat glands
🗑
stratified columnar epithelium | found in mammary glands, salivary-gland ducts and in small regions of the pharynyx, epiglottis, anus and urethra
🗑
pseudostratified columnar epithelium | lines the naval cavity, the trachea, bronchi and parts of the male reproductive tract; contains stem cells and goblet cells
🗑
transitional epithelium | lines organs such as, the urinary bladder and uterus, that must stretch and shrink, not all touch the basal lamina

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
To hide a column, click on the column name.
To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.
You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.
Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
