Black Codes Southern laws that severely limited the rights of African Americans after the Civil War.
Scalawag Southern white who had opposed secession.
Carpetbagger A uncomplimentary nickname for a Northern White who went to the South after the Civil War to start a business or pursue a political career.

Segregation Enforced separation of races.
Sharecropper A person who rents a plot of land and forms it in exchange for a share of crop.
Secede To withdraw from an organization,country, or political party.
Uncle Tom's Cabin Novel written to show the evils of slavery.
Republican Party Political party established in 1854 with the goal of keeping slavery out of Western territories.
Popular Sovereignty Control by the people
Fugitive Slave Act Law passed in 1850 that required all citizens to aid in the capture of runaway slaves
Emancipation Proclamation President Lincoln's 1863 declaration freeing the slaves in the Confederacy
