What is the area of the US called that is in the middle of the country and is flat, farmland? The Great Plains
How did the "Exodusters" get their nickname? They were African Americans who left the South like the slaves from a Bible story (Exodus).
How did the "Homesteaders" get their nickname? They got land from the law known as the Homestead Act.
How did the "Sodbusters" get their nickname? They had to cut through the thick sod before they could farm the land.
How did the "Pioneers" get their nickname? They were the FIRST to move out to that area.
What were the 3 requirements of the Homestead Act? 1. 21 year old or head of household 2. small fee ($10) 3. promise to farm the land for 5 years
What is Nicodemus, Kansas known for? It was settled by African Americans
Why was is so difficult for the settlers in the spring? There were tornadoes
Why was is so difficult for the settlers in the summer? It was hot and dry and there were fires
Why was is so difficult for the settlers in the winter? There were blizzards
Why did many settlers use sod to build their houses? There weren't very many trees (lumber) in the area.
What insect was so abundant that it often ate entire fields of crops? grasshoppers
Name 3 pieces of technology that helped farmers in the Great Plains. steel plow, windmill, barbed wire
