Vocab for The first History test

QuestionAnswer
Magna Carta 1215 A.D. It limited the Government. It was signed by King John. the Nobles had to agree for the King to be able to raise taxes.
Constitution a contract that outlines all or your freedom and rights.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau Wrote a book called The social contract. Said that Real government exists only by consent of the people.
John Locke Believed that people were intitled to natural Rights: Life, Liberty, and Property. People have a right to rebel against a government that doesn't protect their rights
Montesquieu Believed that everyone was intitled to liberty. Thought of 3 branches of Government, Legislative, Executive , and Judical.
Virgina Statue for Religious Freedom No person could be forced to attend a particular church or be required to pay for a church with tax money. A separation of church and state.
Suffrage The right to vote
Articles of Confederation The document that governed the country through the war of independents. Created one branch of congress.
Ratification an official opproval
Land Ordiance of 1785 Set up a system to Survey the northwest area.
Northwest ordinance of 1787 No slavery in the Northwest and set up a way for the Northwest area to join the union.
Northwest Territory Lands including present-day Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin; organized by the northwest Ordinance of 1787.
Tariff taxes on imports or exports.
Interstate Commerce Each state makes their own trade laws(very frustrating.)
Depression Massive Unemployment, Inflation, Negative Economic growdth.
Inflation When the value of money is reduced.
Shays Rebellion Farms were being taken because the farmers could not pay land taxes. They were being put in debetors prison. A farmer named shay rebelled against this. He was defeated.
Constitutional Convention A convention to create a new document to replace the articles of confederation. James Madison is the father of the constitution.

Virginia Plan James Madison came up with it. Representation based on population of every state. A bicamle Legislature.
New Jersey Plan Every state gets one vote. One house legislature. Representation based on equality.
The Great Comprimise aka the Conn. Compromise Roger sherman came up with it. It made an upper house (equality New Jersey plan) and a lower house (population Virginia plan)
3/5ths Compromise Only 3/5ths of a states slave population count for representation.
Commerce Compromise Banned slavery in 1807 in exchange for allowing the government to regulate interstate commerce.
Popular Sovereignty The idea that people could vote for their own government.
Federalism The sharing of power between a central government and the state that makes up a country.
Legislative Branch makes law
Executive Branch Enforces law
Judicial Branch Runs the court system. Interprets law.
Checks and Balances Regulates power, keeps one branch from getting to powerful
Antifederalist People who oppose the ratification of the constitution
Federalists People who agreed with the constitution.
George Mason helped produce the antifederalists papers.
Antifederalist papers essays that did not support the constitution
Federalist papers Essays that supported the constiution.
Amendments A change in the constitution.
Bill of Rights The first 10 Amendments that garentied individual freedoms.
