Social Studies Terms and Definitions

joint-stock company a business in which investors pool their wealth in order to turn a profit
charter a written contract issued by a government giving the holder the right to establish a colony
Jamestown the first permanent English settlement in North America
John Smith The leader of the colonists
indentured servant a person who sold his or her labor in exchange for passage to America
House of Burgesses created in 1619, the first representative assembly in the American colonies
Bacon's Rebellion In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon marched into Jamestown,took control of the House of Burgesses,and burned Jamestown to the ground
Pilgrims A separatist group; they rejected the Church of England,sailed to America, and founded the Plymouth Colony in 1620.
Mayflower Compact An agreement that the men aboard the Mayflower signed;they vowed to obey laws agreed upon for the good of colony;self-government and majority rule.
Puritans The puritans wanted to reform,or "purify",its practices
Great Migration The movements of Puritans from England to establish settlements around the world, including 20,000 who sailed for America
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut A set of laws that were established in 1639 by a puritan congregation in Connecticut; extended voting rights to non-church members and limited the power of the governor.
Roger Williams Founded first baptist church in America. in 1636,he fled southward and founded the colony Rhode Island.
Anne Hutchinson She believed that a person could worship God without the help of a church,minister,or Bible. She had discussions in her home that challenged church authority. in 1638, she fled to Rhode Island.
King Philip's War A war between the Puritan colonies and Native Americans in 1675-1676
Peter Stuyvesant The New Netherland colony governor;he attacked the nearby charter colony of New Sweden in 1655.
Patroon A person who brought 50 settlers to New Netherland and in return received a large land grant and other special privileges.
Duke of York Drove the Dutch out of New Netherland in 1664, and became the owner of New York.
Proprietary colony a colony with a single owner
William Penn Owned Pennsylvania,which means "Penn's woods".
Quaker A person who believed all people should live in peace and harmony;accepted different religions and ethnic groups.
Royal colony A colony ruled by governors appointed by a king.
James Oglethorpe He founded Georgia in 1732
