North vs South

Events and terms leading up to the Civil War

QuestionAnswer
In the mid 1800's, where did most Southerners live and work? They lived in rural areas and small towns and worked on farms.
In the mid 1800's, where did most Northerners live and work? They lived in cities and worked in factories.
What did the tariff law of 1846 do? It lowered the taxes on goods coming from other countries.
Who appreciated the new tariff law of 1846 and why? The South preferred to buy cheaper goods from other countries, esp. Great Britain.
Who did not like the new tariff law of 1846 and why? The North produced their own goods in factories and did not want the South to buy goods from overseas.
What is sectionalism? When people are loyal to one part of their country rather than to the whole country.
What was an abolitionist? He believed slavery was wrong and fought to do away with it.
What does "secede" mean? To break away
What is the definition of "Union States"? States that remained loyal to the US government
What is the definition of "Confederacy"? The new government that the seven seceded states formed
Who was the president of the Confederacy? Jefferson Davis
Who was the president of the Union? Abraham Lincoln
In April 1861, the Confederates demanded that the Union surrender what? Fort Sumter
Where was Fort Sumter located? Charleston, SC
Who was Fort Sumter's commander? Robert Anderson
What is a civil war? A battle between people of the same country
What is the definition of a "border state"? A state located between the Union and the Confederacy states that still had slaves but were Union. They were unsure what side to be on.
Name the 4 border states. Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, Kentucky
What was the Missouri Compromise and when was it passed? 1820 - It divided Louisiana into 2 territories: a southern area with slaves and a northern area with no slaves
What did Harriet Beecher Stowe do? Wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin telling of the cruelty of slavery.
Who was John Brown? An abolitionist who led attacks on slavery owners
What happened at Harper's Ferry, Virginia? John Brown led a raid of the army arsenal there to get weapons to attack slavery owners. He & his men were caught and hanged.
What event started the Civil War? Jefferson Davis ordered the Confederate soldiers to attack Fort Sumter when the Union did not immediately turn it over to the Confederacy.
