| What is a charter? | A written contract, issued by a government, giving the holder the right to establish a colony. |
| What is Jamestown? | The first permanent English colony. |
| Who is John Smith? | A soldier and adventurer, who ran Jamestown. |
| What are indentured servants? | Men and women who sold their labor to the person who paid their passage to the new colony. |
| What was the House of Burgesses? | Created in 1619, became the first representative assembly in the American colonies. |
| Bacon's Rebellion | Bacon demanded that Berkley approve a war, when he didn't this sparked the rebellion in 1676 |

| Mayflower Compact | Agreement to obey laws for the good of the colony. |
| Puritans | Religious group separate from the church of England |
| Great Migration | Thousands of Puritan families fleeing England |
