Electoral College A body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.
Judicial Review power of courts; determine legislative &executive actions are in accordance w/consitution
Federalism power is divided between national and state governments
Popular Sovereignty State is created by &subject to the will of people
Representative Republic A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
Limited Government Government is limited what may do &each citizen has certain rights that cannot be taken a way
Checks and Balances Each branch of government is subject to certain restraints by the other two
Eminent Domain The right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation.
Veto To reject or prevent a bill from becoming a law
Due Process Legal proceedings carried out according to established rules &principles
Bill of Rights A statement of the rights of a class of people, in particular.
Flag Etiquette Proper placement, handling and use of flags.
Separation of Powers When powers are separated to create equality.
Referendum A general vote by the electorate on a single political question that has been referred to them for a direct decision.
Habeas Corpus A writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court to secure the person's release unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention.
Marriage Laws Your marriage certificate is valid everywhere
democracy Government controlled by its citizens, either directly or through representatives
direct democracy Government in which citizens rule directly rather than through representatives
republic Power is in hands of representatives and leaders are elected by the people
tyranny Government in which single person has complete control
tariff Tax on imports
levy To impose a tax
ratify Approve or agree to
president can: -Veto Congressional legislation -Nominate judges -Neither branch can check President’s ability to pardon Federal prisoners
