Bit The smallest unit of information recognized by a computer
Byte A group of bits strung together to form a character
Central Processing Unit (CPU) The brain of the computer that directs all the operations necessarry for a computer turn data into information
Character A symbol generated on the computer screen by pressing any key
CD-ROM Disks that are used to store data
Data Facts or figures that are assembled and processed to produce needed information
Default A particular setting for a variable that is assigned automatically by the software and remains in effect unless changed by the user
Disk Drive The drive in the central processing unit where a disk is inserted
Edit to change the contents of a document
File A document that is stored electronically
Flash Memory Faster than disk storage with up to 16 GB or more or data transferring over a universal serial bus (USB)
Floppy Disk A storage device made of flexible plastic material on which electronic data can be recorded
Format The arrangement of data for storage or display the method for achieving such an arrangement
Hard Drive A storage device typically located in central processing unit that is enclosed in an airtight case. This the main storage device of a computer and are fastest and have the greatest storage capacity
Hardware Another name for computer equipment
input devise any hardware device which allows the user to enter data into the computer
keyboard the most common method of inputting data into computer and processing that data
modem a communications device that allows a computer to connect to the internet
monitor the component of a computer that displays text and images on a screen
network two or more computers that are connected together to share resources such as hardware, data and software
output device a device, such as a printer, video display, or speaker, that presents data from a computer to a user
printer output device that produces text or graphics on paper
random access memory (RAM) saves all data while the computer is turned on and automatically erases it when the computer is turned off
router a network device that connects two or more networks to one another
save storing a document or data electronically
scanner a device that reads an image or document especially for use or storage on a computer
storage device a hardware device capable of holding data or information
