| Byte | A group of bits strung together to form a character |
| Central Processing Unit (CPU) | The brain of the computer that directs all the operations necessarry for a computer turn data into information |
| Character | A symbol generated on the computer screen by pressing any key |
| CD-ROM | Disks that are used to store data |
| Data | Facts or figures that are assembled and processed to produce needed information |
| Default | A particular setting for a variable that is assigned automatically by the software and remains in effect unless changed by the user |
| Disk Drive | The drive in the central processing unit where a disk is inserted |
| Edit | to change the contents of a document |
| File | A document that is stored electronically |
| Flash Memory | Faster than disk storage with up to 16 GB or more or data transferring over a universal serial bus (USB) |

| random access memory (RAM) | saves all data while the computer is turned on and automatically erases it when the computer is turned off |

| scanner | a device that reads an image or document especially for use or storage on a computer |
| storage device | a hardware device capable of holding data or information |
