Andrew Jackson 1st Democrat. Responsible for the "Trail of Tears". Considered a "man of the people". Nick-named "Old Hickory". Against the Nat'l Bank. In office during Nullification Crisis. In favor of Spoils System.
What is a bank Bond? a paper note promising to repay money after a certain length of time with interest.
Jay's Treaty Treaty in 1974 that resolved left over issues from the American Revolution. The treaty Britain and America and ultimately avoided another war with Britain.
XYZ Affair Under John Adams' administration. The French had been impressing US sailors and Adams sent over diplomats. 3 French agents named "X-Y-Z" demanded bribes, but the US refused. An unofficial naval war occurred until the French eventually stopped.
What was the Second Great Awakening? A religious revival movement in the early 1800s with evangelism.
What were the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? no power to tax, no power to enforce treaties, every state had 1 vote (regardless as to size), no power to regulate commerce (no federal tax), and it required an unanimous vote to amend the A of C
Where did the Louisiana Territory come from? Thomas Jefferson bought it for $15 million dollars from Napoleon Bonaparte of France.
What kind of government did opponents of the Constitution (anti-federalists) want? a strong state government
What was Shay's Rebellion? Daniels Shays, a Massachusetts farmer, led an uprising over increasing taxes. The financial crisis in the states and the dangers of such uprisings influenced the confederation to meet and revise the Articles of Confederation.
What is an abolitionist? Someone in favor of ABOLISHING slavery (getting rid of it)
Spoils system Practice of appointing people to government jobs on the basis of party loyalty and support.
Caucus System practice of selecting presidential candidates at a meeting of the party's congressional members
National Nominating Convention Practice of selecting presidential candidates at a meeting of state delegates
Nullification declaring a federal law invalid
Secession withdrawing from the union
Cotton Gin Invention by Eli Whitney that removes the seed from the cotton
Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 Spain ceded FLORIDA (yay!) to the US

"The Star-Spangled Banner" was written after what event? the attack on Fort McHenry during the war of 1812
What did Marbury v Madison establish? judicial review (ability to declare a law unconstitional)
Impressment when another country seizes US sailors
Embargo Act Jefferson's (terrible idea!) to stop all trade with Europe
Elizabeth Cady Stanton was famous for... women's suffrage
Steamboats were better than barges because... they could go upstream AND downstream :)
Amending the Constitution is a 2 part process. Name those 2 parts. 1- Proposal by Congress 2- Ratification
Why was the Constitutional Convention closed? to prevent the representatives from being influenced by outside political pressures
