What made Rosa Parks famous? A female leader took a stand and refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man.
Who was Vasco De Gama? A Portuguese explorer who was the first to sail directly from Europe to India
Why was Harriet Tubman such an important figure in History? An escaped slave who helped other slaves to escape through the Underground Railroad
What was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famous for? An American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement, most famous for his “I Have a Dream” speech
Who was Henry Brown? An escaped slave who hid in a wooden box on his way to freedom
Who was Christopher Columbus? He was an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, hoping to find a route to India but he found the Caribbean instead.
Who was Linda Brown? An African American third grader who was forced to attend a school for black children far away, even though there was a "white elementary school" only seven blocks away from her home.
What was the Middle Passage? It was the journey made by slave ships across the Atlantic Ocean between West Africa and the West Indies.
What were the conditions like on a slave ship? There were no bathroom facilities, and there was an unpleasant smell. Slaves were chained together and cramped.
Why did the farmers in the southern states of the USA need slaves? They wanted slaves to work on their plantations.
What were the main reasons why early explorers travelled to new places in the world? 1) Looking for new land for the growing population 2) Wealth – gold, silver and spices 3) Spreading the Christian Religion 4) Increasing opportunities for trade 5) Building European Empires
What is a plantation? A farm or estate on which cotton, tobacco, coffee, sugar cane, or the like is cultivated
What is the meaning of the word economics? The study of the way that people and countries spend money and make, buy and sell things
What are raw materials? Materials before being processed into a final form
What is a servant? A person employed by another, especially to perform domestic duties
What is an abolitionist? A person who favors putting an end to capital punishment or slavery
What is opportunity cost? What you decide to give up when you make an economic choice
What is an astrolabe? An instrument to help sailors navigate by the stars
What is a trade-off? When you give up one thing to get or buy another
What was the Underground Railroad? It was the system which included a number of safe houses and secret routes, by which escaped slaves from the South were helped in their flight to the North
