Democracy comes from Ancient Greek and means “for the people” and “by the people”
The Magna Carta was signed in 1215 by King John of England. It decreased the power of the King.
The Mayflower Compact is an agreement made by the Pilgrims that ensured self. It was signed on the mayflower boat
Articles of the Confederation is the first plan of government of the United States which gave more power to the states then the central government
The purpose of the US Constitution is to divide the power between the central government and the different states
Constitution embodied the Preamble, the 7 Articles (the main body), the Bill of Rights (first 10 amendments), and the Amendments (the following 17)
The Preamble outlines the purposes of government and is the introduction to the Constitution
The Articles of the Constitution are broken into seven parts. The first three articles define the power of the three branches of government. The last four define the power of the states.
The Bill of Rights includes the first 10 amendments which state the fundamental rights and privileges of US citizens.
The Amendments are the alterations or changes to the US Constitution.
Checks and balances is a system that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches
Legislative branch has the power to make laws and rules, and is led by Congress
Executive branch has the power to carry out and enforce the rules, and is led by the president
Judicial branch has the power to settle disagreements over the laws or rules, and is led by the US Supreme Court.
Congress consists of the Senate “Upper house” and the House of Representatives “Lower house”
The House of Representatives is the house of Congress in which each state’s number of representatives is determined according to its population
The Senate is the house of Congress in which each state has an equal number of representatives (2 per state= 100) The Cabinet of the President
Qualifications to be the President are being at least 35 years old, and a natural born citizen. The term of office is 4 years
Qualifications to be a Senator are being at least 30 years old, a US citizen for 9 years and a resident of the state represented. The term of office is 6 years.
Qualifications to be a Representative of the House are being at least 25 years old, a US citizen for 7 years and a resident of the area represented. The term of office is 2 years.
A Federalist is a person who favored the plan of government created by the Constitution, also one of the first US political parties
An AntiFederalist is a person who opposed the ratification (approval) of the Constitution.
Ancient Roman and Greek civilizations influenced American culture and democratic government
A Democratic Society is a society in which people have equal rights
Political Party is a group of people who share similar ideas about government (ex Republicans and Democrats)
Nation state is a government representing a territory of people with a common culture and language.
Citizenship - is the status of a citizen with rights, responsibilities, and privileges. Demonstrating good citizenship includes voting, paying taxes, and becoming a productive member of society.
The qualifications for US citizenship are acquired through birth, or naturalization
Naturalization is the process by which an alien (person from a foreign country) becomes a US citizen
Popular sovereignty is when the vote of citizens is considered the final authority (embodied in US Constitution)
The Electoral College is group of electors who select the president and vice. This system is still used today, except that voters now choose electors directly
