| Whiskey Rebellion | Pennsylvania farmers rebelled in protest of a tax on Whiskey. Washington put down the rebellion. |
| Federalist | Believed in a loose interpretation of the governemnt, supported a national bank, often wealthy northern land owners. |
| Democratic-Republicans | Opposed a large Federal government, opposed the national bank, supported the bill or rights, often southern farmers. |
| Jay's Treaty | Treaty with Britain offering peace and an increase in trade. |
| Pinckney's Treaty | Treaty with Spain giving the US access to the Mississippi River. |
| Sectionalism | Divisions within the country caused by strong sectional pride rather than strong national pride. |
| XYZ Affair | Diplomats were send to France in hopes of minimizing the issues at sea. The results strained relations with France, as they tried to bribe US diplomats. |
| Alien and Sedition Acts | President Adams' attempt to limit immigrants from joining the Democratic-Republican Party as well as limiting government criticism. Was not recieved well. |
| Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions | Resolution written by Jefferson & Madison in opposition to the Alien and Sedition acts which presented the idea of nullification. |
| Nullification | The idea that states should not have to obey laws made by the Federal government that are not constitutional. |
