Right after the south seceded, what did they do to start the Civil War? Took over Fort Sumter
What were the border states? States that had slaves but stayed in the Union
Who were the rebels in the Civil War? The Confederate soldiers
What did the Emancipation Proclamation do? Freed all slaves in the Confederacy & made ending slavery a war goal
What was Abe Lincoln's main goal in the Civil War? Preserve the Union
What was the Underground Railroad? Set up hiding places to help slaves escape to the North & to Canada
What was a turning point in the war & known as the bloodiest battle? Gettysburg
What did Lincoln say was his main goal in the Gettysburg Address? Preserve the Union
Why was the siege of Vicksburg important? Gen. Grant surrounded the city & got control of the Mississippi River
Who won the First Battle of Bull Run? South (Confederates)
What was Total War Strategy? Destroy anything that can be useful to the enemy. Hurt civilians too.
