How did John Brown;s attack on Harpers Ferry increase tension between the North and the South? Brown was tried for treason and murder and sentenced to hang. On the day that he was hung, Northerners tolled bells and fired guns in salute. SOutherners were enraged by Brown's actions and horified by the Noortherners reactions to his death

What was Breckinridge's (S.D) platform? supporting slavery
What was Douglas's (N.D.) platform? popular sovereignty
What was Bell's (C.U.) platform? preserving the Union
How did the Southerners feel about secession? based arguments on the idea of states' rights, formed the Confederate States of America, said states voulintarily joined the Union so they can leave
How did the Northerners feel about secession? thought what the Southerners were doing was unconstitutional, seceding states were not "playing by the rules"
What was the reason the first set of states seceded from the Union? many Southerners warned that if Lincoln won, they would secede from the Union
