Sante Fe Trail A trail from Missouri to Sante Fe.
Oregon Trail A trail from Missouri to Oregon Territory.
Manifest Destiny The idea the United States was destined to expand west.
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Ended the Mexican War, have land to the US, and set official borders.
Mexican Cession Land gained by the US from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
California Gold Rush When a large number of people migrated to California in search of wealth. (1849)
Emigrant Someone who leaves one country to settle in another.
Immigrant Someone who comes into a country from another country.
Push-Pull factors The things that make someone want to leave or come to a place.
Famine A severe food shortage.
Prejudice Negative opinion not based on facts.
Brigham Young A Mormon leader who moved his group to Utah.
James Polk A US president who strongly supported Manifest Destiny.
How did the concept of Manifest Destiny contribute to the growth of the US? They were able to control all resources, including rivers, gold, and coastline. The idea was popular in the US, they believed it was their god given right to settle the whole continent.
Describe the events leading to the Mexican War and its impact on the US. Border disputes brought tension and eventually war between the 2 nations, with the US winning and gaining large amounts of land.
What events led to the influx of immigrants from Europe to the United States between 1820 and 1860? Famine, prejudice, and opression drove emigrants from Europe, and economic opportunity and land appealed to them.
Identify the following territorial acquisitions. Oregon Country: 1846.... Gadsden Purchase: 1853.... Texas Annexation: 1845.... Mexican Cession: 1848
