Enlightenment Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Divine Right belief that a monarch received the right to govern from God and not from the people
Scientific Revolution Took place between 1550 and 1700. Scientists used experiments, logic and reason to study the physical world. Influenced the Enlightenment.
Monarchy Form of government in which the ruler (monarch) is a king, queen, emperor or empress. A monarch usualy inherits the title and holds power for life.
American Revolution War between the American Colonies and Great Britain leading to the formation of the United States. Influenced by ideas of the Enlightenment
Declaration of Independence Document asserting independence of the American Colonies from Great Britain.
Constitution
Religious Toleration willing to put up with someone's rughts to believe and worship in a different way than you do
Social Contract
Revolution dramatic or violent change. It could be political, social, cultural or intellectual.
Enlightenment Intellectual movement of the 18th century in which the ordinary person rejected the authority of rulers and the church, and valued his own logic and ideas
