appeal An appeal is a petition for review of a case that has been decided by a court of law. The petition is made to a higher court for the purpose of overturning the lower court's decision.
Democracy : government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
Checks and balances each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others. This way, no one branch becomes too powerful.
Ratify Sign or give formal consent to (a treaty, contract, or agreement), making it officially valid.
Ordinance an authoritative decree or direction : order, : a law set forth by a governmental authority; specifically : a municipal regulation
Referendum the principle or practice of submitting to popular vote a measure passed on or proposed by a legislative body or by popular initiative
Political Party political organization that typically seeks to influence government policy, usually by nominating their own candidates and trying to seat them in political office.
Initiative a procedure by which a specified number of voters may propose a statute, constitutional amendment, or ordinance, and compel a popular vote on its adoption. b. the general right or ability to present a new bill or measure, as in a legislature.
Federal Republic is a federation of states with a republican form of government
Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the 13 founding states that legally established the United States of America as a confederation of sovereign states and served as its first constitution.
Zouaves The 72nd Pennsylvania wore a modified Zouave uniform, with Chausseur pants and jackets with little fancy trim. Their trademark was their vest and leggings.
chamberpot a bedroom vessel for urination and defecation
Company of the West It was a private bank, but 3/4 of the capital consisted of government bills and government accepted notes. Law was named the Chief Director of this new company, which was granted a trade monopoly of the West Indies and North America by the French gov't.
