What do we call it when one region does what is best for them and not what is best for the whole country? sectionalislm
What was the purpose of the Missouri Compromise, 1820? Missouri wanted to join the Union as a slave, but this would have made an equal number of slave states. Henry Clay came up with the compromise that MO could be admitted as a slave state if Maine was admitted as a free state.
Where did Henry Clay suggest the line be drawn between free and slave states? The line would be where the Louisiana Purchase lands were located. North of the line would be free states and south of the line would be slaves states. ( worked for 30 years)
How did tariffs protect the Northern factory owners? It made imported goods (goods shipped into our country from other other countries) more expensive because they had to pay the tariff tax. This made the Northern goods easier to sell because they did not have the tariff tax.
How did the tariff tax hurt the Southerners? Wealthy Southerners imported many manufactured goods from England and they did not want to pay the high tariff tax.
Who did not support the tariff tax and argued that the states should have the final say on the laws that affected them and not the national government (believed in state rights before national gov. rights)? Vice President John Calhoun
On what issue did Pres. Andrew Jackson and V. Pres. John Calhoun differ? Pres Jackson believed in a strong fed gov.= can set tariffs V. Pres. Calhoun believed in a strong state gov. = no tariffs set by fed. gov
What did the differing viewpoints on slave states, tariffs, and role of the fed. government lead to? Sectionalism (dividing of the Union based on the needs of the region and not the whole country-Union)
What was the Compromise of 1850? After the Mexican-American War the US gained new lands (California, New Mexico, and Utah). Henry Clay helped with this compromise also. Calif. entered as a free state and New Mex. + Utah could decide for themselves about slavery.
How did the North and South feel about the Fugitive Slave Law? North - against did not want to turn in slaves that had escaped South - for the Law because they wanted their slaves returned; property
What act changed the Missouri Compromise by allowing two states north of the Louisiana Purchase line to decide if they wanted slavery? Kansas-Nebraska Act (this act split the nation even more and led to a terrible fight in Kansas)
What state north of the Louisiana Purchase line had so much fighting over the issue of slavery that it was called "Bleeding _________"? Bleeding Kansas (in the end it joined as a free state)
