Equality All people have the right to be treated equally even though they are different in some way
Common Good We need to work together for the ggod of our community 3 parts: 1. someone 2. gives up something 3. for the benefit of others
Truth THe goverment should not lie to any person or other goverment
Rule of law Everyone, including goverment leaders and officials, must obey the laws
Executive Enforces the laws, makes sure they are carried out. Includes the President
Separations of powers The goverment has 3 branches. No one Branch is more powerful than the others. Each branch has different members and duties. The 3 branches of the goverment are the : Executive, Legislative, and Judicial
Individual Rights People have certain basic rights that are not created by governments, but which the government should protect. These are the right to life liberty, economic freedom, and the "pursuit of happiness."
Federalism The states and the Federal government share power and responsibilities, as it is explained in the Constitution.
Civilian control of the Military Civilian (non-military) people should be in charge of the military. The president of the USA is the Commander in Chief of all the armed forces of the U.S.A.
Judicial interprets the laws, includes the supreme court
Legislative Makes the laws includes the Congress- which is both the House of representatives and the Senate
Checks and Balances The powers of each branch of goverment are balanced so that no branch can dominate the others
Representative Goverment Citizens of the USA elect officials to represent their opinions and interests in the goverment, at all levels-city, county, state and federal
Speration of Church and State The Church has no control over the state (goverment) and the state (goverment) has no control over the Church (any church)
Pursuit of Happiness We may do as we please as long as we do not step on the rights of others
Patriotism We show love and respect for our country and the core democratic values of our country through our words and actions
Diversity Differences including dress, language, food and religion, among the citizens of our country are acceptedc because they enrich our lives
Popular Sovereignty The power of the gov. is given to it by its citizens. the gov. must use its powers to follow the voters wishes.
Liberty Each individual is entitled to personal freedoms. We are able to make individual individual choices without government involvement as long as we don't break the law.
Life W have the right to protect ourselves from harm or injury, and the goverment has an obligation to look out for our health and our lives.
What is the U.S. Constitution? America's plan of goverment
Popular sovereignty The power of the goverment is given to it by it's citizens. (example: voting) The goverment must use their power to follow voter's wishes.
Repblicanism We exersise our power by voting for representatives
Delegated powers Powers given by the constitution to the National Goverment (military and printing Money)
Reserved powers Powers given by the Constitution to the state goverment (Marriage laws and schools)
concurrent powers Shared powers between the Sates and the national goverment (taxes)
Seperation of powers Ensures that no one will have to much power
Checks and Balances Makes sure that no branch can do alot without the OK of the other two branches
Limited Gov. No one in the goverment can abuse their power
Constitution LIvign Document that changes as the people of the country need it to
Justice All people have the right to be treated fairly by the government and the laws. No person or group should be favored.
Individual Rights Continued It is the purpose of government to protect these rights, and it may not place unfair restraints on them.
