| sectionalism | Loyalty to a section or part of the country rather than to the whole country |

| Union | The side of the northern states in the Civil War |
| Confederacy | 11 southern states that seceded from the United States in 1861 (AL, AK, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, TX, VA) |
| nullification | Refusal of a U.S. state to enforce a federal law |
| Anaconda plan | Winfield Scott’s plan for fighting the Confederate states. It did not work, because the Union army was not big enough. |
| blockade | Shutting off an area by troops or ships to keep people and supplies from moving in or out |
