ruffians Men who were for slavery that fought in the Civil War
fugitive Someone who flees or runs away after breaking the law
sectionalism Loyalty to a section or part of the country rather than to the whole country
secede To break away from a group; the south broke away from the United States
Union The side of the northern states in the Civil War
Confederacy 11 southern states that seceded from the United States in 1861 (AL, AK, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, TX, VA)
nullification Refusal of a U.S. state to enforce a federal law
Anaconda plan Winfield Scott’s plan for fighting the Confederate states. It did not work, because the Union army was not big enough.
blockade Shutting off an area by troops or ships to keep people and supplies from moving in or out
emancipation The act of setting somebody free
proclamation A public announcement
aggression Attack directed against another person or country
inaugurated To swear formally into office
total war A war in which every available resource is used and full financial resources are spent
assassinated To kill a political leader or other public figure.
