What was the Freedman's Bureau? An organization set up to help African Americans after the War.
What did the Freedman's Bureau do? 1. It gave out food and clothing. 2. It provided medical services. 3. It established schools. 4. It also helped people buy land, get jobs, and receive fair payments.

What did President Johnson call his plan for Reconstruction? Restoration
What did Johnson's plan for the South do? 1. Granted amnesty to Southerners who swore the loyalty oath. 2. Confederate officers, wealthy landowners had to apply to Johnson personally for pardons. 3. States had to ratify the 13th amendment.
What were black codes? Laws passed in the South after the Civil War to discriminate against African Americans and reestablish slavery in disguise.
What were 3 examples of black codes passed in 1865 and 1866? 1. allowed for the arrest of unemployed African Americans. They would then have to work to pay off their fine. 2. Denied African Americans the right to rent or own land. 3. Made orphaned African American children serve as unpaid apprentices.
What was the Civil Rights Act of 1866? Congress' answer to Southern black codes, to stop the discrimination in the South.
What did the Civil Rights Act of 1866 say? 1. It gave full citizenship to African Americans and gave the federal government the right to protect them.
What did the 14th amendment do? It granted full citizenship to any individual born in the US. It also said that no state could take away a citizen's rights without due process. Citizens were granted equal protection of the laws.
What was Radical Reconstruction? The period when Congress passed the Reconstruction Acts.
What did the First Reconstruction Act do? It established 5 military districts in 10 southern states that had not ratified the 14th amendment.
What were the provisions of the First Reconstruction Act? 1. African American men were guaranteed the right to vote in state elections. 2. Former Confederate leaders could not hold political office. 3. Each state had to ratify the 14th amendment.
What was the Tenure of Office Act of 1867? A law passed by Congress that limited the president's power.
What did Johnson do that the Senate did not approve of? He fired his Secretary of War without congressional approval.
What happened to Johnson, and why? He was impeached. Congress accused him of overstepping his authority.
Was Johnson removed from office? No, the vote to remove him was one vote short, so he was not removed from office.
