Who was Barry Goldwater? Conservative Republican who ran for Presdient against LBJ in the 1964 election. VERY CONSERVATIVE

Who were the VC or the "CHarlie"? Vietcong (communist/bad north vietnamese)
Who were the NVA? North Vietnamese Army (also a bad guY)
Who was Ho Chi Mihn? Leader of the North Vietnamese (bad guy)
Who was Ngo Dihn Diem? Put into power in South Vietnam by the US and other allied forces. He turned out to be hated and we eventually allow him to be assassianted
What does DMZ mean? Demilitarized zone (a buffer zone between two countries)
What was operation Ranchland? used to defoliate 50% of South Vietnam
What are 2 chemicals used to burn through the Jungle Canopy? Napalm and Agent Orange
What was Operation Rolling THunder? Bombing of North Vietnam and South Vietnam Countryside
What is the "new" left? very liberal democrats in the 1960s. An example would be the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)
What was SDS? Students for a Democratic Society- grassroots group established on college campuses. Some segments were violent. All in protest of the War.
What was the Counterculture of the 1960s? The "hippies"
Where were the hippies centered? Haight-Ashbury portion of San Francisco
Who was a leader of the "Black Power"movement? Malcolm X (Malcolm Little).
What was Malcolm X a member of? Nation of Islam (Black Muslims). Sought to fight against discrimination by "all means necessary" even violence
Who were Stokely Carmichael and Huey Newton? Both were founding members of the Black Panther Party (armed and took to the streets)
What was the My Lai Massacre? Civilian Vietnamese (women and children) were massacred in VIetnam by a ttack led by AMerican William Calley.
What happened at Kent State in 1970? 4 students died while protesting the war. They were fired upon by the National Guard.
Name 5 things that happened in 1968? Tet Offensive, Assassinations of MLKj and RFK, Democratic National Convention chaos and the election of 1968 (nixon wins)
What happened on Tet of 1968 (new years) The NVA and VC launched attacks all across Vietnam. The US got pushed back and then eventually recovered. A psychological loss for the US
Who killed MLKj James Earl Ray- a white man. This assassination caused riots

Who was Sirhan Sirhan? Robert Kennedy (potential Democratic Presidential nominee)'s assassin. Sirhan Sirhan was an Arab man made at RFKs attention to Israel

Who signed SALT with the USSR? Nixon
What did SALT do? It limited the # of weapons that the US and USSR could have.
What is Vietnamization? training the south Vietnamese to take over the war effort
WHat is Detente? Nixon and his secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, sought to ease the strain between the US and the Soviet Union
What is stagflation/ unusual circumstance of HIGH unemployment and HIGH inflation (prices are high)
What was Watergate? scandal involving Nixon. Watergate hotel was where the Democrats had their headquarters. Nixon had CREEP- the committee to re-elect the president, break-in. They got caught.
What does CREEP stand for? Committee to Re-Elect the President
Who were Woodward and Bernstein? The Washington Post reporters who uncovered the Watergate Scandal
Who was "Deep Throat"? Woodward and Berstein's informant
What ends up happening to Nixon? He resigned. First President in history.
Who became President after Nixon? His VP- Gerald Ford
What was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution? Basically a declaration of war on Vietnam made by Johnson
Who was Elijiah Muhummad? The leader of the Black Muslims.
Who was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1953-1969? EARL WARREN
Where did Nixon escalate the war in Indochina? Cambodia (he bombed it)
Who was James Brown? "Godfather of soul" singer who embraced the Black Power movement.
What was the Port Huron Statement? It was the manifesto of the SDS.
