What departments/organizations were created by the National Security Act of 1947? Department of Defense, National Security Council, Air Force, CIA
Who wrote the article on Foreign Affairs that called for the policy of containment to be used against the Soviets? George Kennan
What was the first European country that hte US supported using the TRuman Doctrine? Greece- we gave them a billion dollars in aid.
What was the Truman Doctrine? Foreign Policy started by Truman to stop the spread of Communism at all costs (money, weapons, soldiers)
What did the Marshall Plan do? It went hand in hand with the Truman Doctrine. It provided economic aid to war-torn European Countries to prevent the spread of communism.
What was (is.. it is still effective) the Taft-Hartley Act? It was also called the Labor-Management Relations Act. It monitors the activities and powers of Labor Unions.
What was the GI Bill? Provided returning soldiers with $ for education, loans for buying homes, job opportunity, Veterans hospitals were built.
How did the Korean War begin? Communist North Korea invaded South Korea
What American General was able to push the North Koreans back? Douglas MacArthur pushed the North Koreans back all the way to the Pyongyang river (in North Korea).
Why did Douglas MacArthur loose the ground that he had gained in North Korea? The North Koreans received support from China and pushed the South Koreans back to the 38th parallel.
Why did southern Dixiecrats not support President Truman (Democrat)? They did not like that Truman was passing Civil Rights Legislation (no more poll tax, federal anti-lynching, deseg. the military).
What was Truman's Loyalty Program? It was an executive order that created "loyalty" boards to examine federal employees to see if they had communist ties. It resulted in the firing of hundreds of govt employees and created "files" on many left-wing artists.
Describe the suburbs (such as Levittown) Communities that represented the "American Dream". They had playgrounds and appliances in the homes. Buying a home was a tax-break. More people than ever before bought homes.
What is NATO? North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The United States, Great Britain, Canada, France etc. etc. all agreed to defend each other in case of attack.
What was the Berlin Blockade? When the Soviet Union, closed all of the gates going in/out of East Berlin. The people started starving, so the US flew in supplies in the "Berlin Airlift"
Why did Truman fire Douglas MacArthur? MacArthur wanted to "nuke" the Koreans and spoke out against Truman publicly.
What was the HUAC? House of Un-American Activites Committee that investigated possible communist in the US. It became a "witch-hunt" that was lead by Senator Joseph McCarthy. People were black-listed (mostly artists/actors/writers).
Who was the first player to break MLB's policy of racial discrimination? Jackie Robinson
What was the "white flight"? When middle-class white families left the cities to live in the suburbs (they were mostly white people).
Where did Mao Zedong force the Chinese Nationalists (Jiang Jieshi aka Chiang Kaishek) when they fled mainland China? Taiwan (a.k.a Formosa).
Did the Russians ever get an atomic bomb? yes.
Who "sold" the Russians the atomic secrets? Ethel and Julius Rosenberg
Who was Alger Hiss? US State Department Official accused of being a Soviet Spy. He was prosecuted by a young Richard Nixon.
