John Peter Muhlenberg Lutheran minister who supported Revolutionary War. Used verse from Ecclesiastes, "To everything there is a season... a time of peace and a time of war. And this is the time of war."
Benjamin Rush One of the Sons of Liberty in Philadelphia. Surgeon General in the Revolutionary War. A delegate supporting the Constitution. Then served as the Treasurer of the U.S. Mint. Helped bridge rift between T. Jefferson and J. Adams.
Jonathan Trumbull Sr. Studied Theology at Harvard and later served as a colonial governor of Connecticut. The only colonial governor to support the American cause. Because of this he became the only governor to remain in office after independence.
Charles Carroll Born in Maryland, educated in Europe. Quickly became involved in the rev. spirit and returned to home. One of the delegates to the Contin. Congress. He was not there to vote on the Decl. of Ind. he signed it. Last surviving signer of Decl. of Ind.
John Jay Member of the 2nd Continental Congress. Was with John Adams & Ben Frank. in Paris to sign the treaty ending the war. Wrote 85 Federalist essays. First Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
John Hancock Spoke against the British Stamp Act. First signer of the Declaration of Independence. First Governor of Massachusetts but died while serving his 9th term.
John Witherspoon Born in Scotland, moved to New Jersey to be the President of Princeton University, & prominent Presbyterian minister. Voted for and signed the Declar. of Indep. Helped draft the Art.s of Confed. and voted to adopt the Constitution.
Articles of Confederation Granted the new govt. the right to borrownand make (coin) money, conduct foreign affairs, make policy for Am. Indians, and settle disputed 'tween states. Each state kept sovereignty. (weakness) NW ORD. gave each new state same power as 1st 13. (strength)
Civil War Dates 4-12-1861 to 4-09-1865. (4 Aprils)
Appomattox Courthouse Where Grant and Lee met for the South to surrender.
Black Codes laws that resembled pre-Civil War slave codes. Later became Jim Crow laws.
Jim Crow laws Like the Black Codes to deprive African Americans rights. These enforced segregation, on train cars and schools.
Plessy V. Ferguson v (1896) established the idea of "separate but equal." Takes place on a Louisiana train, where it was decide that the cars were equally clean and safe, there was no limit of rights. (even if no comfort)

Panama Canal began by the French in 1881 but left unfinished because of bankruptcy. US began to work on it in 1901. (T. Roosevelt) Opened for shipping in 1914.

Rough Riders famous group of cowboys fought in Spanish American War. Leader was T. Roosevelt. Famous battle was San Juan Hill.
Maine Ship that was in Havana Harbor. Explodes & newspapers blame Spain. Used as a cry to go to war. Later it is revealed that the Maine explodes from within.
Open Door policy idea began with President McKinley, then T. Roosevelt used this as a way to force China to trade with the World.
Big Stick dilomacy because of Americas growing involvement in world affairs, T. Roosevelt "walk softly carry big stick" came to be known as the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Docterine
