Study for words that will be seen on the STAAR test

| Italicized | A writing style added to words, usually making them slope, to add emphasis. |
| Assumption | Something that has been taken for granted or supposed. |
| Illustrate | To make a concept clear through examples or analogies. |
| Conclude | To end or make a decision. |
| Dialogue | A conversation between different characters in works of literature. |
| Excerpt | A quotation taken directly from a book, movie, or other source of information. |
| Playwright | The author of a play. |
| Protagonist | The leading character or hero in a work of literature. |
| Antagonist | A character that is against or opposed to another character in a work of literature. |
| Symbolic Imagery | Imagery that is to express an idea |
| Reference | The act of referring or inferencing |
| Dramatic Irony | Irony that is understood by the audience, but not the characters in a dramatic situation. |
| Objective Point of View | When a writer states no more than what can be inferred from the dialogue in a literary work. |
| Figurative Language | Comparing one thing or concept to another thing or concept by using methods such as metaphors, similes, and personification. |
