What were the seasons like in the south? Short, mild winters and long, hot summers
What were the wide coastal plains in the south for? Growing rice, cotton, indigo, sugarcane and tobacco
How did Eli Whitney's cotton gin affect the economy of the south? Increased slavery and made cotton king (lots of cotton)
What shift did the industrial revolution begin with? Changed from hand made products to machine made products
Why were so few factory's and mills built in the south? Southerners invested money in land and slaves
What inventiion changed agriculture in the North? The Reeper- Made cutting grain 28x faster
By 1850, what had become the cheapest and fastest way to move goods in the north? Railroads/ Trains
How did most goods move in the south? Rivers/boats
Who were the political leaders in the South? Rich plantation owners
Why were immigrants more attached to the north than the south? Factory jobs
What is deforestation? Cutting down trees for profit
What is an agrarian? A person who farms
What is a plantation? A huge farm
What is a cotton gin? Machine to clean cotton
What is the Industrial Revolution? Change of handmade goods to factory made goods
What is an industrialist? People who own factories
What is an immigrant? Someone that came from another country
