What was Manifest Destiny? A belief that Americans had a mission to spread their democracy to the less fortunate.
What were mountain men? Fur trappers and traders
How long was the Oregon Trail? 2000 miles
What were some Oregon Trail problems? bad weather, food shortages, and mountains and rivers
Where did the Sante Fe trail start and end? Led from Independence, Missouri and ended Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Why was the Santa Fe trail a difficult journey? There were hot deserts and mountains.
When Mexico gain independence? May 2, 1821
Who were the agents responsible for bringing settlers to Texas? empresarios
Who was Stephen Austin? An empresario who started a colony on the Colorado River in 1822.
What attracted American settlers? Free land in exchange for obeying Mexican Law.
Who was declared ruler of Mexico? Santa Anna
Who led the Texans at the Battle of the Alamo? Colonel Jim Travis
What was the Alamo? A mission.
At which battle did the Texans gain independence? Battle of San Jacinto
Who was elected president of Texas after the war? Sam Houston
Who was declared secretary of state of Texas after the war? Stephen Austin
Why did Pres. Jackson oppose annexing Texas as a state? It would disrupt the balance of slave and free states.
