| Martial Law | Rule by the Army instead of Government |
| Border States | States that were on the border of the South and North. Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Maryland |
| Stonewall Jackson | Thomas Jackson, a confederate General, had his troops stand their ground at Bull Run like a stonewall. |
| Battle of Bull Run | A Confederate victory and was the first battle. Showed both sides the soldiers needed training. |
| George McClellan | Union Commander of the Army of the Potomac. Trained the soldiers. |
| Merrimack | A confederate iron clad ship. Invincible against the Union's ships. |
| Monitor | The Union iron clad naval ship. Easier to maneuver than the Merrimack |
| Battle of Antietam | A day long battle in which 13,000 people were killed or injured. The Confederates retreated. Technically Union victory. |
| Battle of Fredericksburg | Confederacy victory and Union's worst defeat. During 1862 Confederates gunned down Union soldiers. |
| Battle Chancellorsville | Lee and Jackson teamed up in thick forest outside Chancellorsville. The nervous soldiers accidentally shot Jackson. |

| Battle of Shiloh | A two day battle in Tennessee. The Confederates won the first day, but Union won the battle. |
| Discrimination | Denies the same treatment and rights to anyone - in this case, black people. |

| Rose Greenhow | A woman spy for the South. She was exiled when she was caught. She was an entertainer for Union leaders. Lived in D.C. |

| Sally Tompkins | A southern woman who set up hospitals in Richmond, Virginia. |
| Siege | A military blockade of an enemy town or position in order to force it to surrender. |
| Battle of Gettysburg | A union victory that took place over three days in July of 1863 in southern PA. Turning point of the war. |
| Gettysburg Address | The speech President Lincoln gave after the Battle of Gettysburg. It was 10 sentences and took 3 minutes to say. |
| Phillip Sheridan | A Union General sent by Grant to destroy the Shenandoah Valley. |
| William Tecumseh Sherman | A Union General sent by Grant to take Atlanta and destroy everything in his path to the ocean. |
