What was the Era of Good Feeling? WHAT? Time of Prosperity and Patriotism after about 1816
Why was Era of Good Feeling referred to this way? WHY? 1) Patriotic feeling 2) American Farmers paid more for their products (wheat, pork, cheese) 3) Value of Farmers’ Land rises 4) Farmers can afford to buy tools (plows, wagons, shovels) manufactured by Americans.
What were the issues involved with the Missouri Compromise? ISSUES? 11 Free & 11 Slave State Balance will be broken if Missouri is admitted as Slave State. This could endanger the Union.
How were issues involved with the Missouri Compromise resolved? HOW RESOLVED? Admit Missouri as Slave and Maine as Free State keeping balance. Drew a Line (northern border of Arkansas Territory) to Rockies splitting north for future Free States from south for future Slave States.
What was the Monroe Doctrine? WHAT? A declaration by President James Monroe that the United States opposed further colonization in the Americas by European nations or attempts to exert influence there. The United States also pledged that it would stay out of Europe’s affairs.
How did the Monroe Doctrine change foreign policy for the United States? HOW CHANGE FOREIGN POLICY? US now acting like a Great Power (like Britain or France) US now claiming right to interfere in Americas
What happened in the Election of 1824? WHAT HAPPENED? Jackson won highest popular vote of 4 candidates but not a majority of Electoral Votes. Election was decided in House of Representatives for John Quincy Adams.
How did it change political parties? HOW CHANGED PARTIES? A new Democratic-Republican Party formed to support Jackson and oppose President John Quincy Adams of National Republican Party.
WHAT was the conflict between the National Bank and President Jackson? For Jackson the National Bank was a powerful force whose mistakes, like calling in Farmers’ loans in 1819, could affect the “people” without their control. In 1831 Jackson vetoed Bank’s charter that was passed by Congress.
In what ways did the United States add new territory? US added territory by migration, war, forced sale, diplomacy, and religious-patriotic propaganda.
What territories were added? TERRITORIES ADDED Florida from Spain in 1819 by negotiation Texas was annexed in 1845 All Mexican territory north of the Rio Grande by war in 1846. Most of Oregon Territory acquired by negotiation with Great Britain in 1845 avoiding war.
What was Manifest Destiny? WHAT? Manifest destiny a propaganda idea developed make Americans feel that it was God’s will that US occupy the Continent from Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans.
How would you describe the move "west"? DESCRIBE MOVE WEST The move west was for many reasons (expansion of slavery, new farmland, gold, religious freedom) and by many means (annexation, war, negotiation, migration).
What caused the war between Mexico and the United States? WHAT CAUSED WAR? Congress admitted Texas as a state in 1845. Mexico didn’t recognized this and disputed Mexican/Texan border. Both US and Mexico sent troops into disputed border and war started and was declare in 1846.
What was the outcome of the war with Mexico? WHAT WAS OUTCOME? US got area that now consists of California, Nevada, Arizona, and western New Mexico and Colorado in Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in a forced sale.
In what ways was slavery an issue in the new territories? HOW WAS SLAVERY ISSUE? Should slavery be extended into the lands won by war?
How was the extension of slavery in the new territories handled? HOW WAS IT HANDLED? The issue was deadlocked because attempts of the Free Soil Party and supporters of the Wilmont Proviso to prevent slavery in any former Mexican land were blocked by those in the South that felt the war was fought to extend slavery.
