The Civil War

What was America often called during the Civil War period? the Union
Why did slavery disappear in the North? Because they could not afford it. They could only keep small farms and couldn't provide cheap shelter in the cold climate.
What were the South's two main crops? Tobacco and Cotton
Who invented the cotton gin? Eli Whitney
Why was the cotton gin such a help to Southern farmers? It didn't take as long to separate seeds from cotton. This made it a lot cheaper to make a lot more, so they needed a lot more workers to plant a bunch more fields.
What two states were brought into the Union under the terms of the Missouri Compromise? Which was slave and which was free? Missouri - slave Maine - free
Who was elected President in 1860? Abraham Lincoln
Why did the South dislike Lincoln? He wanted the states to stay together and he didn't like slavery.
Which state left the Union first? Name the other six states that left the Union. What name did the Southern states choose for their new nation? South Carolina left first. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas They called themselves the Confederate States of America.
Who was Jefferson Davis? The President of the Confederacy
What were the Northern soldiers called? Billy Yanks
What were the Southern soldiers called? Johnny Rebs
Where was the first battle of the Civil War fought? Fort Sumter
How many states made up the Confederacy? 13 - Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas joined after Lincoln called for soldiers to fight Confederacy. These states couldn't bear to fight their own Southern neighbors.
How many states stayed with the Union? 22
What did the North set up against the South to weaken it? a blockade to try to keep foreign supplies from coming in
What was the name of the first Southern ironclad ship? What was the name of the first Northern ironclad ship? Which ship won the battle when they fought each other? South - Merrimac, North - Monitor Neither one won
What document issued by Lincoln freed the slaves? the Emancipation Proclamation
What important effect did the Emancipation Proclamation have on the Civil War? It stopped Europe from coming to help the South since they already outlawed slavery.
Who was General Ulysses S. Grant? the General of the Union
Who was General Robert E. Lee? the General of the Confederates who had been a General of the Union, but couldn't fight against his home state of Virginia and so joined the Confederacy
What was the turning point of the Civil War? the Battle of Gettysburg
What battle put the Mississippi River under Northern control? the Battle of Vicksburg
Which Union General marched his troops to the sea, destroying everything on the way? General William T. Sherman
What was the capital city of the Confederacy? Richmond, Virginia
What was the site of Lee's surrender to Grant? farmhouse in Appomattax Court House, Virginia
What two things did the Civil War make certain? No state would leave the Union and there would be no slavery
Who shot and killed President Lincoln? John Wilkes Booth
Who became President after Lincoln's death? Andrew Johnson
