The American War for Independence

What is a tax? Extra money added to things which goes to the government to help run it paid by the people
What is a representative? A person who represents a certain people and is chosen by them to have a say in big choices
What is a massacre? A cruel killing of many people at the same time
How many colonists were killed in the Boston Massacre? Five (including Crispus Attucks, a black patriot)
Who was Crispus Attucks? A black patriot killed in the Boston Massacre.
How did the colonists respond when King George III tried to force them to accept British tea with the taxes? What was this event called? 1)They threw the tea into the water of Boston Harbor. 2)This event was called the Boston Tea Party.
Name the group of representatives who met to decide what to do about England's unfair treatment of the colonies? the First Continental Congress
Who said, "Give me liberty or give me death!"? Patrick Henry
What were the colonists who wanted to be free from England's rule called? the patriots
What were the colonists who remained loyal to England called? Loyalists or Torries
Name the soldiers who said they could be ready to fight at a minute's notice? the Minutemen
What did Paul Revere and William Dawes do? warn the people and minutemen that, "The British are coming!"
What happened at Lexington and Concord? 1) The start of the war (shot heard round the world was at Lexington) 2)Minutemen fought the British who were trying to take patriot ammo & guns and patriot leaders

Who were the Hessians? German soldiers hired by Britain to fight the patriots because a lot of British soldiers wouldn't fight against the patriots thinking it was wrong because they thought the king un fair and the colonists British citizens.
When was the Declaration of Independence signed? July 4th, 1776
Near what city did Washington and his men cross an icy river to surprise the Hessians at Christmastime? They crossed the Delaware River at Trenton, NJ
On what day did George Washington present the new American flag to Congress? June 14th, 1777
What is often called the turning point of the War of Independence? Battle of Saratoga, NY
Where did General Washington's army spend the harsh winter of 1777-78? Valley Forge, Pennsylvania (The British stayed in Philadelphia)

What Scotsman was determined to help the American Navy be successful? What was the name of his ship? In his most famous victory, what ship did Jones capture? John Paul Jones on the ship called Bonhomme Richard. He captured the British ship Serapis
Which general led the British army near the end of the war and eventually surrendered to Washington? Cornwallis
When the war shifted to the Southern Colonies, who was sent to lead the American forces? General Nathanael Greene
What was the deciding battle to end the war and what happened? At the Battle of Yorktown, George Washington brought his army down from the North/Northwest and Nathanael Greene brought his up from the South while the French and American navies blockaded Yorktown to defeat Cornwallis. The British surrendered Oct 1781.
What treaty ended the War for Independence? the Treaty of Paris signed in 1783.
